Small children hum like cats when they eat. This memory is worth recovering.

depending…

The Sun, with all the planets revolving around it and depending on it, can still ripen grapes as though it had nothing else in the Universe to do.

feverish…

The beet is the most intense of vegetables. The radish, admittedly, is more feverish, but the fire of the radish is a cold fire, the fire of discontent, not of passion. Tomatoes are lusty enough, yet there runs through tomatoes an undercurrent of frivolity. Beets are deadly serious.

the gist of it…

My wife is in the sewage treatment profession. She has become somewhat famous for giving speeches at conventions of Engineers and Professionals in the industry which are considered shocking and radical, but entertaining, so they keep asking her back. The gist of her talks comes down to one simple point. It can be summarized as, “There is no away.” As in it is delusional thinking to assume that something undesirable can be thrown away, or something toxic can be taken away, or something unwanted can be removed. Everything remains here on earth and just gets moved around.

stories you read…

Beware the stories you read or tell; subtly, at, night, beneath the waters of consciousness, they are altering your world.

orwell…

Perhaps when Orwell described sheer egoism as a necessary quality for a writer, he was not thinking about the sheer egoism of a female writer. Even the most arrogant female writer has to work overtime to build an ego that is robust enough to get her through January, never mind all the way to December.
